RED SOX HEAD TO WAREHAM IN SEEK OF A THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

By: Tom Skulski, Intern

SOUTH YARMOUTH — The 2-0-1 Y-D Red Sox head 35 miles West tonight to take on the Wareham Gatemen at 6:45.

The Gatemen are still looking for their first win of the season after two losses to Cotuit and Falmouth in their first two games, followed by a rain out last night in Falmouth. The Red Sox on the other hand are looking to build off of their momentum with two straight wins coming against Harwich and Chatham.

Adam Maier (British Columbia) is set to take the mound for Y-D tonight. This will be his first start in the Cape League as well as his first start since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the shortened 2020 season, Maier was 3-0 in his starts for the University of British Columbia and took the mound as a reliever twice, picking up one save.

Last night, Maier could not stress enough how thrilled he was to be taking the mound for a team like Y-D. He was delighted to get the nod for tonight’s start, and is honored to be wearing a Red Sox uniform.

“I’m super excited, I mean I have kind of been preparing the whole year for this moment so I’m really excited. Fantastic league, and I’m ready to show what I got… I’m fired up,” Maier said.

Y-D has been a little erratic at the plate this season but has managed a total of 20 hits, 11 runs, and a team batting average of .208 through the first three games of their season. Red Sox shortstop, Brooks Lee (Cal Poly), leads the team in batting with 6 hits and a .500 batting average this season.

Tonight may be a good chance for Y-D to pick up some slack offensively as the Gatemen have given up eight runs in each of their games this season.

Samuel Natera (New Mexico State) is scheduled to take the mound for Wareham. The southpaw had 14 appearances for the Aggies with a 2-3 record, and a 6.47 ERA.

The weather is set to be 70 degrees and sunny by first pitch in Wareham, so grab a hat and a glove and head over the bridge to Spillane Field tonight for what is sure to be another great game in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
