Breakdown of Y-D and Cape League playoff scenarios

By Jim Russo

With yesterday’s Y-D loss and Orleans win, the Red Sox lead in the East Division is down to one point. The two teams play each other today at Y-D. The Red Sox lead the season series 3 games to 2. They finish at Wareham and the Firebirds close with a home game against Chatham.

Today’s games and their playoff implications:

Orleans at Y-D – The Red Sox would clinch the East Division title with a win. If they lose, they can still finish first if they defeat Wareham and the Firebirds lose to Chatham on Wednesday. Orleans can clinch the division title by winning both its remaining games.

Bourne at Cotuit–The Kettleers clinched the West Division with their win yesterday over Brewster. The Braves are locked into the fourth and final playoff spot in the West.

Wareham at Hyannis – With last night’s loss to Falmouth, Hyannis leads by two points in the race for second in the West with two games left to play. A win tonight clinches second because they would get a tie based on their 4-2 record against the Commodores this season. The Gatemen are eliminated from the playoffs.

Falmouth at Harwich – The Commodores have clinched at least third in the West and could still finish second with two wins and two Hyannis losses. The Mariners are locked into third in the East.

Brewster at Chatham – Although Chatham could still tie Brewster for the last playoff spot in the East, the Whitecaps have clinched it based on their 4-0-1 record against the Anglers this season.
