Saturday Spotlight: RJ Austin and Smith Pinson Shine Bright for Y-D in Four-Win Week

By Brian Melanson

Offensive Player of the Week: RJ Austin

Fresh off of winning SEC Tournament MVP, Vanderbilt’s RJ Austin found his rythym batting leadoff for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Austin was the only Red Sox player to record a hit in every game this week, going 7-19 (.368) with four RBI, five walks and just two strikeouts. He also hit his first home run of the summer in Y-D’s 11-5 victory over the Chatham Anglers, his best game thus far. He scored twice and walked once in the contest. Austin leads the team with a .367 batting average.

Pitcher of the Week: Smith Pinson

In his third start of the season, Pinson was lights-out against the Bourne Braves. The Kennesaw State right harder delivered a seven-strikeout performance over six innings, the longest a Y-D pitcher has gone this season. Pinson allowed just two weak singles and issued no walks in a seven inning shutout of Bourne. He routinely pounded the strike zone and caused swing-and-misses as 52 of his 74 pitches were for strikes. Resulting in his first win of the season, it was Pinson’s third start with five or more strikeouts.
