Saturday Spotlight: Dub Gleed and Leighton Finley propel Y-D to 3-1 week

By Brian Melanson

Offensive Player of the Week: Dub Gleed

Gleed shined when the lights were the brightest for the Red Sox this week. The University of California Irvine rising sophomore was clutch in Y-D’s three wins. On Sunday, Gleed launched his first home run of the season early on against the Brewster Whitecaps that turned out to be the deciding run in the 3-2 win.

“I was leading off that inning so I was just trying to get on anyway I could,” Gleed said. “I knew it was gonna be a close game and I was just trying to help out any way that I could.”

Yesterday, Gleed had the opportunity to play the hero again. With the winning run 90 feet away at third in a 3-3 contest in the bottom of the tenth, Gleed took the first pitch he saw deep enough into center field for Zander Darby to tag and barrel across home to win the game 4-3 against the Bourne Braves.

“I was trying to do it on the first pitch that I could do something with and that happened to be the first pitch of the at-bat… Just try to hit something deep in the air and get him in,” Gleed said.

Pitcher of the Week: Leighton Finley

Finley appeared in two of the four games for the Red Sox this week and was shutdown in both outings. Against Brewster on Friday, the Georgia right-hander entered in the seventh inning in a close contest. He worked efficiently, allowing just two hits and issuing three strikeouts in his three innings of work in the 3-2 win.

On Wednesday, the Red Sox allowed the Hyannis Harborhawks to come within one in the ninth inning before Finley was called in to close them out. After issuing a walk and inducing a fielder’s choice, he worked a bases-loaded pop fly to end the game and secure Y-D the close 5-4 victory.

In total, Finley pitched 3.2 innings over his two appearances allowing just two hits, two walks, and dealing three strikeouts.

He has been one of the strongest relievers out of the bullpen this season and is the only pitcher on the roster with a 0.00 ERA. On the season, Finley has pitched 11 innings with 12 strikeouts and two saves to his name.
