Y-D Gets First Win

By David Bramley

BREWSTER, Mass. ? Kevin Smith (Maryland) and Brendan Skidmore (Binghamton) lead the charge for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (1-5) as they beat the Brewster Whitecaps (2-4), 10-8, Thursday evening at Stony Brook Field.

Smith was unstoppable at the plate going 4-for-5 with a single, two doubles and a two-RBI home run, while Skidmore went 3-for-5 with two singles and a two-RBI double.

They weren?t the only ones who were seeing the ball well for the Red Sox, as the team totaled 17 hits in their first win.

It seemed as if the two-RBI home run by Matt Davis (Virginia Commonwealth) in the fifth, and the two runs scored in the seventh were too much for Y-D. However, in the eighth inning, the Red Sox?s bats came alive.

Matt Whitaker (Stanford), who scored two runs in the inning, started off with a base hit. Everyone joined the hit parade, as they had seven hits and eight runs. The dagger in the heart of the Whitecaps was the two-run dinger by Smith.

At this point, the Red Sox were up 9-4.At the bottom of the frame, Davis, who had five RBI in the game, hit a three-run shot putting the Whitecaps within two.

An RBI by Smith in the top of the ninth added a little insurance, with a Y-D lead of 10-7.

Bryan Pall came in during the bottom of the ninth, giving up one run. He recorded his first save, as the Red Sox win 10-8.

Both starting pitchers had impressive outings. William Montgomerie (Connecticut) was on the bump for the Red Sox and went five innings with six strikeouts. Hunter Martin (Tennessee) was on the hill for the Whitecaps and went 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.

Yarmouth-Dennis plays against Cotuit on Friday at Red Wilson Field at 5 p.m.
