Despite a tie with Harwich in the two teams’ final meeting of the summer and a loss to Hyannis at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford, the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox managed to win each of their next two games to move within a point of clinching a playoff berth, and six points away from clinching the East Division title.
Y-D’s fifteen hits on the day set a new season-high, passing the 12 the Red Sox had against Bourne on June 21. The win also dropped Y-D’s magic number to one after Chatham’s loss to Cotuit. All the Red Sox need is a tie in the remaining eight games to guarantee a playoff berth.
After facing deficits of 5-0 and 7-5, the Y-D Red Sox were able to salvage a point, scoring two in the bottom of the ninth to come away with a 7-7 tie.
The Sox got their second straight win on Thursday in seven innings after a 46-minute delay to extend their division lead over the Brewster Whitecaps.
Though the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox entered the bottom of the ninth trailing the Chatham Anglers by a run, they scored the tying run on a throwing error before stranding the bases loaded in the ninth, settling for a 6-6 tie Sunday night at Red Wilson Field.
