COTUIT, Mass. ? The Cotuit Kettleers erupted for four runs in the first inning and never looked back, as the hosts shutout the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 11-0 Saturday at Lowell Park.
With one day remaining in the regular season, Y-D is now 22-21-0, while Cotuit moves to 17-26-0 on the summer.
Sending nine men to bat in the first, Cotuit burned little time before breaking into the run column. Y-D starting pitcher Evan Bell (Indiana) recorded two strikeouts to start the frame, but ultimately surrendered six hits with two outs. Singles by Tim Susnara (Oregon) and Branden Berry (Cal State Northridge) drove in two runs apiece, giving the Kettleers an early 4-0 lead.
Cotuit also added runs in the fourth (1), sixth (2), and eighth (4) innings, once again sending nine batters to the plate in the eighth.
Y-D?s best shots at eroding the deficit came in the fourth and eighth innings. Tommy Edman (Stanford) walked to start the fourth, moving to second on a Donnie Walton (Oklahoma State) single before both were stranded. Both were also left on in the top of the eighth.
Bell (0-2) received the loss for Y-D, while Daniel Brown (Mississippi State) earned the win (2-0) after an impressive 6.1 inning performance.
The Red Sox wrap up the regular season Sunday at Red Wilson Field, playing host to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks at 4:30 p.m.
