News and Notes: Regionals Report

It?s no secret that the Cape League is comprised of college baseball?s elite. It?s also not news to college baseball fans that we?re at the time of year when the path to Omaha is first laid out, beginning with the NCAA Division I Regionals. The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox were well represented this past weekend, with twelve members of its 2013 roster (and seven former players) playing in the postseason back at their respective schools. Here?s a look at some notable performances, by regional:

Chapel Hill Regional:

Trea Turner/INF/NC State

Team: Finished with 3-0 record and advanced to Super Regionals

Turner: 4 for 10, RBI, 3 BB, 4 runs scored

Auston Bousfield/OF/Ole Miss

Team: Finished with 1-2 record, did not advance

Bousfield: 1 for 12, RBI, BB

Tanner Mathis ?12/OF/Ole Miss

Team: Finished with 1-2 record, did not advance

Mathis: 6 for 12, 4 runs, RBI, BB

Fullerton Regional:

Matt Chapman/INF/Cal State Fullerton

Team: Finished with 3-0 record and advanced to Super Regionals

Chapman: 4 for 10, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 4 runs

Notes: Game vs. Arizona State finished at 3:50 AM Eastern Time Sunday because the previous game was 13 innings and took 4 ? hours to complete

Los Angeles Regional:

Eric Filia/OF/UCLA

Team: Finished with 3-0 record and advanced to Super Regionals

Filia: 6 for 12, 4 runs, 2 RBI, BB

James Kaprielian/P/UCLA

Team: Finished with 3-0 record and advanced to Super Regionals

Kaprielian: 2 IP, 4 K, 6 BF (1 appearance)

Zack Weiss ?11/P/UCLA

Team: Finished with 3-0 record and advanced to Super Regionals

Weiss: 2 IP, 2 K (2 appearances)

Andrew Daniel/INF/San Diego

Team: Finished with 2-2 record, did not advance

Daniel: 2 for 10, 2 RBI, 3 BB

Notes: San Diego was eliminated by UCLA in the Regional Final, 6-0

Manhattan (KS) Regional:

Kevin McAvoy/P/Bryant

Team: Finished with 1-2 record, did not advance

McAvoy: 1 start (final vs. Arkansas) 3 IP, 5 ER, loss

Notes: Although McAvoy was shaky in his sole Regional appearance, he was solid in the Northeast Conference Championship Game, throwing a complete game 3-hitter, which was instrumental in setting up his team for its first baseball postseason win (against Arkansas on May 31).

Charlottesville Regional:

Brandon Downes/C/OF/Virginia

Team: Finished with 3-0 record and advanced to Super Regionals

Downes: 4 for 12, 3 runs, RBI, BB

Tallahassee Regional:

DJ Stewart/OF/FSU

Team: Finished with 3-0 record and advanced to Super Regionals

Stewart: 7 for 11, 6 runs, 5 RBI, 3 BB

Bloomington Regional:

Sam Travis/OF/1B/Indiana

Team: Finished with 3-0 record and advanced to Super Regionals

Travis: 5 for 11, 5 runs, 3 BB, 3 RBI
